Please be aware that GP practices no longer undertake vaccination, and this is now run in specific hubs or clinics across different venues. For information, the following travel vaccines are available free on the NHS for the purpose of travel to patients living in Scotland. Where a risk of infection is recognised, and where effective vaccines are available to staff who are not already immune, immunisations will be offered. If your staff are planning an overseas visit as part of their work or studies it is important that their travel needs are assessed. Legal Obligation The University of Edinburgh has a duty of care to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all employees whilst at work. This includes all University employees who as part of their role require to travel overseas. In line with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 Edinburgh University has a duty of care to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all employees whilst at work. This means also all Edinburgh University employees who as part of their role require to travel overseas. Regulation 6 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 states that ;“every employer shall ensure that his employees are provided with such health surveillance as is appropriate having regards to the risks to their health and safety which are identified by the risk assessment” All immunisation programmes will be in accordance with Department of health (DoH) and Health Protection Agency (HPA) guidance and recommendations. Immunisation programmes will be in accordance with the advice and recommendations given within the “The Green Book - Immunisation against infectious disease” published by the DoH. Only immunisations relating to job risk/job related travel risk will be offered. Any other advice/immunisations should be sought via employee’s own GP or travel health centre. All immunisations administered within the Occupational Health Unit will be carried out according to written instructions for the specific use of a medication as prescribed by the Occupational Health Physician including; instructions for medication dosage, route of administration and general advice to be given to the individual, commonly known as 'standing orders'. These are formulated collectively by the professional members of the Occupational Health Unit and comprise of a written document containing rules, policies, procedures, regulations, and orders for the conduct of administration of medication in various clinical situations, stipulating the circumstances in which to prescribe a particular course of action based on the specific considerations for an individual (i.e. the travel itinerary and individuals medical history).
