Fire Stewards

Details on Fire Stewards' roles and responsibilities, and the guidance available.

The Fire Steward's role is voluntary, taken up by at least one person in a department/area. Specific numbers required depend upon your Building and School staff numbers.

List of duties

  • Attend Fire Stewards training as appropriate;
  • Undertake and record the weekly Fire Alarm Test. Full training will be provided during the Fire Steward training course;
  • Assist Fire Coordinator in completing the annual fire drill;
  • Undertake a weekly check of all fire equipment in your area. A checklist has been produced to aid in this task, but you may need to modify it for your own area;
  • Ensure that all staff in your area are familiar with the general evacuation procedure for your building/area;

Training

Attend Fire Stewards training and refresher as appropriate. More details on the training can be found in the Training Section.

Fire alarm tests

Undertake the weekly Fire Alarm Test. Full training will be provided during the Fire Steward training course.

Weekly checks

Undertake a weekly check of all fire equipment in your area. A checklist has been produced to aid in this task, but you may need to modify it for your own area.

If any equipment is found to be faulty or require more signage, please log this via EBIS.

Emergency evacuations

  • Ensure that all staff in your area are familiar with the general evacuation procedure for your building/area.
  • Check your area has been evacuated whilst making your own way out of the building/area.
  • Report to the Fire Coordinator whether or not your area is clear.

Fire vests

All Fire Stewards should have a luminous fire vest. These can be provided by the Fire Safety Unit on request.
