A specific Code of Practice (CoP) and template risk assessment form accompanying that CoP have now been drafted to assist schools in undertaking a vibration risk assessment and implementing any necessary control measures. Hand arm vibration (HAV) and whole body vibration (WBV) are possible consequences from using equipment with a vibration hazard at work. The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 govern the management of this hazard in the workplace. The HSE have also produced two guidance documents to accompany this Regulation; ‘L140 Hand-arm vibration - The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005’ and ‘L141 Whole-body vibration - The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005’. The new CoP will take managers through the requirements to ensure compliance as well as reduce any hazards to an acceptable level. Should any staff be exposed to levels in excess of the regulatory exposure action level, clear information is included in the CoP on what managers are expected to implement at that stage, such as the requirement to ensure staff are added to a statutory occupational health assessment programme which will be implemented by the Occupational Health Service.
