Policy

The University Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy is issued upon the authority of the University Court. It is accompanied by two documents - the 'Framework for Managing Health and Safety' and the 'Framework to Support Wellbeing Activity: commitment to staff mental health'.

The previous version of the Policy has been rescinded as well as the Framework: Organisation, however, the document named 'Framework: Arrangements' is still current and will be reviewed in 2025/26.

Main changes to highlight:

  • The University’s updated organisational statement on health, safety and wellbeing reflects our commitment to reducing harm to both physical and mental health.
  • Two new frameworks set out responsibilities for staff at all levels of the University.
  • The policy now clearly defines what University activity it covers, including responsibilities for on and off campus work.
  • Schools and Departments will now review their risk profile each year. These reviews will be shared with the six management groups and used to support local objective setting.
  • The network of health and safety colleagues in Schools and Departments will receive enhanced support. The School Safety Adviser title has been amended to Health and Safety Coordinator, with refreshed duties. The local professional roles will benefit from increased support and mentorship.

We maintain our guiding ethos: taking a proportionate, risk-based approach informed by the guidance available, and seeking specialist advice when it is needed for complex risk
