Healthy Working

The Healthy Working package should be undertaken by all staff who work with display screen equipment (DSE) as this provides training in best use.

Course outline

The areas of training consist of;

  • Introduction to Ergonomics
  • Sitting comfortably
  • Your monitor
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Tablet
  • Avoiding discomfort

You must complete all the training sections to undertake the test. On successful completion of the test, you are then led into a self-risk assessment questionnaire with further guidance on remedial actions if required.   Please remember to visit your "My Healthy Working Action Plan" after you have completed your training and risk assessment as this will provide advice on addressing any issues highlighted in your risk assessment. The training will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and should be done at your normal place of work.

If appropriate you can also choose to include additional questions relating to new or expectant mothers, sit-stand desks, dual monitors and smart phones in your training and risk assessment.

It is a legal requirement for the University to offer this training to all staff who use display screen equipment (PC/Mac/laptop/tablet/smartphone) as part of their role.

Training and a new risk assessment should be completed at least every 3 years, if a user's circumstances change (move roles/workstation), and/or if a Line Manager / Cardinus Administrator requests it is done/renewed.

Completion of the online training will be recorded in People and Money.

If you would like to speak to your local Cardinus Administrator about the results of your risk assessment, please contact them directly.

Multiple work stations

If you have more than one workstation that you normally work at, for example, two offices on different campuses, then you should complete a risk assessment for each workstation. It would be helpful if you could add the location of your workstation in the last section of the risk assessment (any other comments section) to enable you and/or your Administrator to easily identify which risk assessment relates to which workstation.

If you use different desks in the same office environment (eg. hot desk, bookable desks), users do not need to complete a risk assessment for each desk, but should use the knowledge from the training to adjust each workstation to make it safe and comfortable to use (as you would do, for example, when you adjust your driving position in a car for the first time) at the start of each working day.

Accessing the course

The course is available for staff to enrol on People and Money.

Users should not login to Cardinus directly, using previous links, as their training will not be recorded in P&M.
