This page details all the health and safety training courses a staff member may require whilst at the University The following courses are available from the Health and Safety Department and should be undertaken by all staff when they first join the University or on appointment to a specific job or new task, for example new project involving radiation work. In addition to the above, there may be local training which staff may also be required to attend, please check with your local School Safety Adviser/Manager or line manager. Mandatory training All staff must receive the following training: Induction to the University - this can be by the Health and Safety Department or provided locally by a School Safety Adviser/Manager Health and safety awareness - this can be by the Health and Safety Department or provided locally by a School Safety Adviser/Manager Fire safety - available on Cardinus, supplemented by local procedures - 3 years DSE/workstation training (if using a computer/laptop) - online using the Cardinus system (course name "Healthy Working") - every 3 years unless changes are made in workstation set up when a new risk assessment should be undertaken Home working - if any time during the working week is spent working from your home or other agreed place, online using the Cardinus system Job/hazard specific training Subject specific training: Health and safety responsibilities of Heads of School and equivalent senior managers - available on People & Money or face to face if desired - at appointment Health and safety awareness for Supervisors - available on People & Money (for staff) and LEARN (for students), or face to face if desired -at appointment The role and responsibilities of the School (or area) Safety Adviser (SSA) - available on People & Money Risk assessment training - available on People & Money (for staff) and LEARN (for students) Investigating minor accidents and incidents - available on People & Money (for staff) Laboratory animal allergens (LAA) - all staff and their students who work with laboratory animals must complete the LAA training courses Biological safety - all staff and students who work with biological agents should attend the appropriate Biological Safety courses Radiation protection - all staff and students who work with radiation must attend the appropriate Radiation Protection courses First aid training - all University first aiders must attend re-training every 3 years Defibrillator and emergency first aid - are available from the Health and Safety Department Laboratory gas safety courses - these are usually arranged locally Safe working with liquid nitrogen - available on People & Money (for staff) and LEARN (for students) Practical CoSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) awareness - available on People & Money (for staff) and LEARN (for students) Manual handling (if moving items regularly) - initially online using the Cardinus system, hands on training should be organised locally Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) - on People & Money (for staff) and LEARN (for students) for all staff and students who wear RPE as part of their control measures Accident and incidents reporting - short video available to show how to report an accident or incident Lab ergonomics - online using the Cardinus system Refresher training Unless specified, there is no set time for refresher training. However, generally it is acknowledged that between 2-3 years is a suitable interval for refresher training. However, if there has been an accident or other incident, those staff or students involved should complete the applicable courses again to refresh themselves and to ensure they are up to date with any changes since they last completed the course. In addition, if there has been any significant changes in the regulations or guidance, training should be undertaken again, regardless of when it was last completed.
